DAN BETE

The Chiefs usually surrounded themselves with young warriors for protection from invading neighbors and exchanged gifts with other chiefs in order to heighten their own prestige. Out of this custom was born the basic tradition of tin among the Dan, which was based on displaying one's success in order to build a good reputation and name.

The Dan world view holds that everything can be divided into two separate and clear categories. The primary dichotomy is between village and bush, in other words, things that have been controlled by man and things that have not. Crossing over the dividing line is dangerous business, and whenever it is done, whether to clear new fields or simply crossing the forest, the bush spirits must be appeased. In order to take part in village life, the bush spirits must take corporeal form. The Dan believe that all creatures have a spirit soul (du), which is imparted onto humans and animals from the creator god, Xra, through birth. One's du is immortal and is passed on after death to a new being. However, some du remain bodiless. They inhabit the forests as bush spirits and must establish a relationship with a person if they wish to be manifested and honored. Often the spirit will request the chosen person to dance the spirit, utilizing a mask to illustrate the spirit's embodiment.

Mask - Tusya / Tusian / Tusayan,B urkina Faso

The Tusya are a small group (about 22,000) that reside in the extreme southwestern parts of Burkina Faso. The Syemu are closely related to the Tusya, and it is very difficult to distinguish between them. They are also closely related to the Senufo, and they speak winwen; a Voltaic language very similar to their Voltaic neighbors.

Like most of the peoples in Burkina Faso, the Tusya are diverse in character and content, with numerous variations in cultural characteristics despite their small population. The northern Tusya are the oldest inhabitants of the area, and call themselves“Tento”. The southern Tusya refer to themselves as “Win”.

Tusya masks such as this example are called loniake... Very two-dimensional, rectangular planks of wood with a bird head projecting from the center of the upper rim,and a broad triangle projecting downward from the lower rim. Small, round eye holes are carved close together high on the face and are surrounded by wax into which red seeds are set. The sides and lower edge are pierced with holes for attaching a fiber fringe.

Masks are worn during initiations, while helmets are used in village purification rites and at funerals. The initiations were held only once a generation, and contact with European culture has made them even more infrequent (last performance in which masks were used took place in April, 1933). They are rare, in part because families have become Muslim.

Condition (see photos):

  • Measures 23 inches tall x 12.5 inches wide
  • Superb aged example with a few very small, but stable cracks, light chips / scratches and some wood erosion.
  • Natural pigments, red seeds, weathered rope. Horn-bill head is detachable from the plank.
